Strap a Hyperprism to It! (3 October 2026 Session Report)

Paul DMing; Scott: Smudge (shadar-kai rogue 9 / barbarian 2) and Martin (duergar cleric 11); Dane: Tudo Fleck (dwarf cleric 11), Rob: Vox (half-elf bard 11).

Last time, our heroes broke the Void Ship free of its icy prison and initiated a very short dogfight with the beholder ship.

The adventurers prepare for the fight with The Gaze by reviewing their inventory of magic items.

They wonder if the "lolly pop handle" energy device linked to the Metacarpus of Ooomega can be used as a bridge or boarding platform.

Tudo asks Smudge to investigate the wall near the Metacarpus platform. Smudge feels the wall and the wall glows with a 9' ring. Smudge pushes with his hands and the wall opens to show a glowing tube. Smudge enters the tube. He can walk in it.

Tudo tries connecting the energy bridge to a mountain. At the end of the tunnel/bridge, Smudge discovers he can "open" the end to make an exit. This is a gangway to connect the Void Ship to docks or other ships.

Smudge grabs a snowball from the mountain, and hurls it at Martin. The snowball hits.

Martin casts death ward on Martin and Vox. Tudo casts death ward on Tudo and Smudge.

Tudo pilots the Void Ship toward the blip on the radar representing the beholder ship.

Tudo buzzes the beholder ship to see if there are any openings. They see one big opening with something crystal-like shining inside and steam or vapor idling streaming out of it.

The ships are three miles in the air.

On another fly-by, smudge sees fungus eyes on the surface of the other ship. Smudge takes a pot shot with his bow. (Natural 20.) Smudge hits something important with his arrow and hears an explosive decompression. A klaxon can faintly be heard.

Vox positions the gangway onto the opening of the beholder ship. Tudo engages the tractor beam to lock the two ships together.

Boarding the Beholder Ship

Smudge crosses the energy gangway and enters the beholder ship. He sees large steaming crystals, like lenses from lighthouses, and a beholder! There's no gravity. The lights are dim. Greebles cover the dark metal of the ship's curved walls. Mushrooms (some looking suspiciously eye-like) sprout between the greebles.

Smudge shoots an arrow at the "beholder" which bursts. It was a gas spore. Smudge fails his saving throw, takes 12 poison damage (and has Disadvantage on attack rolls and ability checks).

Smudge teleports out of the poison spore cloud, which is still hanging in the zero-G air.

Martin sacred flames one of the lenses, and the radiance scatters in a random direction. The radiant energy burns off some of the poison cloud.

Two sharks fly in. Martin sacred flames one for 20 damage.

Tudo summons spirit guardians. The spirit guardians damage the sharks.

Tudo swings Smudge and Vox out of the firing hallway, into two sharks.

A shark snaps at Smudge but misses. Vox misses. Smudge stabs a shark with his rapier, killing it, turning it into a 2,000 pound flying fishy log.

The shark corpse collides with Martin and carries him toward the outside opening.

Vox hits the remaining shark with his crossbow.

Smudge anchors himself to a wall and throws a dagger at the shark, wounding it a little more.

Extradimensional Hyperprism

Tudo pushes off the wall and flies toward one of the big crystal lenses, placing the Extradimensional Hyperprisom at the lens's focal point.

Hyperprisom effect: every living thing within a mile is hit by a random Beholder ray effect and both ships instantly warp to the Negative Plane.

Vox takes 43 damage from a beholder death ray.

The living shark is slowed by a beholder eye beam.

Martin and the dead shark are still flying toward the opening to the void outside. Martin kicks off the shark in a direction away from the opening, away from the anihilation of the Negative Plane.

The shark charges toward Tudo, its jaws snapping, but Tudo's spirit guardians finish it off.

Tudo removes the Extradimensional Hyperprism from the beholder firing crystal and pockets it.

The extradimensional hyperprism is magnetic. Tudo magnetizes the hperprism to his shield, along with a mirror: shield, mirror, prism.

Trevor

A giant snail slimes its way down the corridor. Smudge shoots the giant snail with an arrow, and it turns away.

"You shot me! I'm trying to save the universe, and you shot me!"

"Save it from who?" asks Smudge.

"I can't tell you that. You could be agents of Vecna."

Tudo: "I'll heal you if you tell us."

Vox heals the snail for 9.

Two more flying sharks show up and Vox shoots a lightning bolt at them.

The giant snail's name is Trevor. He's been working here, enslaved by the beholder, for 300 years.

A Very Brief Truce in the Negative Plane

One of the sharks enters the gangway to the Void Ship. Martin sacred flames the shark.

Another beholder (?) shows up.

"Cooperate, you fools! We're in the Negative Plane!"

The beholder goes with them to the Void Ship, barely fitting through the gangway. It distributes devices of some kind to the artifact stands on seven platforms. (The eighth plinth is occuppied by the Metacarpus of Ooomega, which the beholder notes with audible surprise.) The beholder activates the devices and the two ships wink to the prime material plane.

A blue sky and a real sun shine overhead. They're no longer in the inner world.

The beholder reveals that it has been coerced by renowned wizards Alustriel Silverhand, Mordenkainen, and Tasha into helping save the multiverse from total domination by Vecna. The beholder (who calls itself "The Gaze") needs the Void Ship and eight unique artifacts in order to locate and bind Vecna.

Vox stabs the beholder. It pops — a gas spore!

Smudge shoots down the boarding tube and pops another gas spore that had been peering from the far end.

That's a total of THREE gas spores down.

Tudo notices that the beholder's ship has tractor beamed their Void Ship.
